For the innocents in every land

The Score

How can we ever settle the score
when it is more in our nature to take than to share
when the crime of otherness provokes fear
and the fear of otherness engenders rage?

How can we ever stop seeing in others
all the faults, the follies, the evil,
the terrible weight of inherited guilt
we refuse to acknowledge in ourselves?

When will the labels and the lies of
our tribes, our clans, our little bands,
no longer matter more than our
shared fate on this small rock?

Life is sweet, and terrible
meaningless and wonderful
from minute to minute, for all of us
in spite of who we are, and all we do

Make one human creature an object
to be scorned and broken
to be used as scapegoat
for your ignorance, your shame

And you condemn all people,
yours as well as mine
to yet another score to be settled
by yet another generation.

Well spoken. Food for thought to take nourishment on.
