The River

Welcome to the river he said,
as he held out an oar

There’s an empty spot there
on the bench by the door

Pay no mind to the darkness
or the cataract’s roar

Take your beat from the helmsman
he’s been here before

Always put your back into it
though your limbs may be sore

You have to pull hard
to earn a share of the store

And when your heart fails,
we’ll lay your bones on the shore

Then return to the waves
and the river.
