Naked Earth

In a moment that is neither night nor day
we leave the concrete world behind

To walk upon the naked earth
the dark path beneath the trees

The branches are our heavens
the yellow leaves our falling stars

We step out of the deeper dark
into a meadow under a starry sky

Knee-high grasses sway and sigh
from the bushes rabbits dart and tease

Brittle leaves rattle one last time
then fly to earth in the predawn breeze

The air is rich with the sweetness of decay
the scent of death that is the scent of life

The brilliance of autumn, the richness and fullness of life. Perfect. A strong thank you to Sigman Shapiro. Keep walking that dog!
