Rome and Beyond – Day 3

Yesterday (Friday) we started the day at 9:00 by visiting the Vatican and viewing the frescoes in the Sistine Chapel.  Too much has already been said about those beautiful images for me to presume to say anything new; however, the crowds of people were a sight in their own right.

There is something off-putting about our fellow humans in massive numbers that is not true in small groups.  By the time our two hours were up and we left the Vatican museums I was more than glade to step out into the sun and be as far from people en mass as I could get.

I was also pretty sure that I had seen enough over the top opulence and conspicuous wealth to render me immune to the whole phenomenon.  Boy was I wrong!  More on that tomorrow.

Later that morning we met up with our daughter and had lunch (another plate of Rigatoni Amatriciana – quickly becoming my new favorite pasta – Yum!) and then headed off to visit the Pantheon (this time from inside) and Santa Maria Supra Minerva (a simple, lovely old church built over the site of an ancient temple to Isis (somewhere in the past the Romans thought the ruins were the temple of Minerva – hence the name).

We ended our sightseeing on the Capitaline hill overlooking the ruins of the Roman Forum.

By 8:oo it was time for dinner (Romans eat late) so we headed across the Tiber to pick up our daughter and visit her favorite Pizzeria and a heavy dinner of delicious Roman food.

We capped the meal with a long walk to a gelateria for some sweet treats, then a 45 minute walk back to our apartment past the Vatican and across the river; ending at midnight as we climbed the steps to our apartment.
