A Brief Vacation

I just came back from a brief vacation.  I was off the grid for email, telephone, and WordPress.  That is the reason for my silence these past few days.

I spent the time with nine good friends at an amazing place in the Colorado Rockies – Grand Mesa.  This is not a travel blog, but I thought you’d like to learn about this location.  It is one of the most beautiful wilderness sites I have ever seen.

We rented five cabins at Grand Mesa Lodge on the shores of Island Lake.  The lodge is at a little over 10,000 feet of elevation.   The owners (Mike and Rose) are wonderful, friendly people and their lodge, though not fancy, was comfortable and a perfect venue for  our gathering.

The mesa is at 10,000 to 11,000 feet and is the world’s largest flat-topped mountain.  It is surrounded by high desert land, some of which has been irrigated to produce crops; in particular, wine grapes!  Need I say more?

The mesa rises abruptly 6000 feet above the valley floor and is covered in a beautiful spruce forest surrounding more than 300 lakes.

We arrived last weekend at the peak of wildflower season.  We did a fair amount of hiking (interesting finding air at that altitude) and wherever we went we were surrounded by acres of meadows in full bloom.  It was like a botany lab!  Dozens of colors, sizes, shapes, and families of wildflowers packed together in unbroken carpets.

This is definitely a place worth making a special trip to see!

  1. Sounds fabulous, Sig! Thanks for sharing!

    • You would love it! We had a pair of Pewees nested in the porch rafters outside our door – the eggs hatched and they shuttled back and forth feeding the babies the last two days we were there.
