Old Times with Hank and Don

I know these people
I grew up with them
the drunks
and liars
the con men
and ex-cons
the wheels
and angels

the sloppy ones
too stupid
or too defiant
to clean up
their act
in public
their women
stringy
hope gone
beaten down
in sad kitchens
old
pitted sinks
and refrigerators
that stank

the tidy ones
ludicrous
in their suits
their ties
and their airs
sipping scotch
craving beer
and trying hard
not to be hicks
their women
silent
smart enough
not to talk
and give it
all
away

the Big Deal men
gray-faced
fat
cigars
ugly
and their women
who looked
just like them
only corseted
and dolled
painted
macabre
nightmare women
with dull
greed and
bovine hatred
behind
their piggy eyes

It was always
Chinaski or Draper
one or the other
and me
their captive
audience

  1. I love this one! When did you write it? Sorry I’ve been unresponsive of late. Too many burnt cakes and elephants! (It was carrot, by the way, with raisins and pineapple– my husband’s favorite). But be assured I try to catch up and read everything. Your pal in poetry, Cowgirl Sushi
