There’s honesty in sadness
it rarely is pretended or contrived.

I’ve seen joy crafted from desperation
and heard laughter that was tinged with tears.

I’ve watched friends dance wide-eyed
down the high road to disaster

and known anger that veiled fears

but sorrow, real sorrow, that
sets shoulders shaking with sobs,

burns eyes red with anguish,
streaks cheeks with hot, salt tears,

such sadness always leaves its mark
it deepens the gaze and brands the heart

with pain that lingers on through years
