Charles Bukowski

Many times in the past few years I have mentioned Bukowski to people, smart people, people who should know his words however hard; and they have said “No who is he?”.   So here is my small bit to correct that situation.   A tip of my hat to an honest man.

“We’re all going to die, all of us, what a circus! That alone should make us love each other but it doesn’t. We are terrorized and flattened by trivialities, we are eaten up by nothing.”
Charles Bukowski

“We are
Born like this
Into this
Into these carefully mad wars
Into the sight of broken factory windows of emptiness
Into bars where people no longer speak to each other
Into fist fights that end as shootings and knifings
Born into this
Into hospitals which are so expensive that it’s cheaper to die
Into lawyers who charge so much it’s cheaper to plead guilty
Into a country where the jails are full and the madhouses closed
Into a place where the masses elevate fools into rich heroes”
Charles Bukowski

“How in the hell could a man enjoy being awakened at 6:30 a.m. by an alarm clock, leap out of bed, dress, force-feed, shit, piss, brush teeth and hair, and fight traffic to get to a place where essentially you made lots of money for somebody else and were asked to be grateful for the opportunity to do so?”
Charles Bukowski

  1. Strong, wise words … I don’t know his writing that well, but am aware of him. A straight shooter indeed and much needed in these times, as ever.

  2. Love this bloke. Of Time And The Line (I think that’s the title) has to be one of my favourite poems ever! People need more Bukowski in their lives, even if he is ridiculously baffling most of the time…
