“Death tugs at my ear and says, ‘Live. I am coming.”
Oliver Wendell Holmes

“But what minutes! Count them by sensation, and not by calendars, and each moment is a day.”
Benjamin Disraeli

“Clouds come floating into my life, no longer to carry rain or usher storm, but to add color to my sunset sky.”

Wall Road Junction

Up ahead this trail turns muddy, as I recall.
Round that bending, rise it drops into a dark, oak-shrouded junction,
through a gate meant to contain the cattle grazing golden grasses
on these sun-baked hills in summer.
But, today, it’s spring and muddy.
New grasses green the dark clay soil erasing all but the faintest
traces of brittle tawny stubble that furred the voluptuous curves
of these old hills just weeks before.
I know, of course, that I should turn down and seek the barns and paving,
the cars and parking lot below; but, up ahead where this trail turns muddy, as I recall,
there’s a field where Ithuriel raises his spears.
And, in my longing to see that scattering of sky blue faces gathered there,
lifted to, the heavy, watery, sky just one more time, one more spring before I’m gone,
I set aside fastidious, domestic sense and I turn up
to shake the sticky clay from boots and poles with every weighted step.
