Not words and music
but words as music

The ringing of the vowels
the hiss and thump of consonants

the rise and fall of syllables
that sing upon the ear

the rests for breath,
the runs that sweep along the tongue

The cadence of the language
familiar, friendly

as it is heard by infants
when the words are merely noises

as if heard from a distance
too muted to have meaning

stripped to sound
and nothing more.
