Children in War

Another tale, and there it is
without shared time and place
or common language, faith, or fate

Again, I try to walk their streets
to finally know the faces, smells,
the sounds that formed their world

The way the light swept down
and spread across the buildings
into courtyards where they played

The way the shadows crept unnoticed
to interrupt the work of growing
to shape their lives in never-ending night

  1. I cannot imagine their exposed feeling of vulnerability. We sit in our easy chairs and warm kitchens over coffee and electronics, and ponder…
