Welcome to Infloressence

Inflorescence – the time and process of budding and unfolding of blossoms

Welcome to Infloressence – the home of Poetry for the Rest of Us.

Infloressence is dedicated to bringing together authors hungry to be heard, and readers hungry for something they can digest.

After reading and writing poetry for several years, we have found that many of the poems we read in traditional poetry outlets, such as anthologies, magazines, and commercially published books, do not speak to us.

Though they almost always show a high degree of technical ability, these poems often leave us with the sense that we have not been participating in a dialog with another person; in fact, that the author did not really intend to speak to us at all, but was either writing only for themselves or for someone with special knowledge that we lack.

By contrast, our participation in amateur poetry groups and attendance at local open poetry readings has introduced us to a whole world of poets whose work is often clearer, more accessible, and more representative of our life experience than the work we find presented in traditional channels.

In short, there are many, many poets in our communities who have something to say, who say it well, in voices we understand, and that speak to us in our own terms.

At the same time, we believe there is a large portion of the reading public with a desire for poetry; poetry that speaks to our shared experiences in a form that is not something that our teachers made us analyze in high school; but that is as touching and familiar to us as our favorite novels, or essays.

To that end, we have established Infloressence:

  • To provide unpublished authors an opportunity to be heard.
  • To provide readers (new and seasoned) a chance to hear new voices
  • To have fun and to discover and enjoy the wide variety of unheard voices around us.

Update

In the time since we  founded this site, we have discovered that most of the authors who submit here do not limit their writing to poetry.  With that in mind we have expanded our original concept to offer an outlet for all forms of writing, including short fiction, personal essays, and poetry
